Cryptocurrency
A digital or virtual currency that uses cryptography for security and operates on a decentralised network, typically a blockchain. Bitcoin is the first and most well-known cryptocurrency.
Cryptocurrencies remove the need for trusted intermediaries by using cryptographic proof instead of institutional trust. Transactions are verified by a distributed network and recorded on a public ledger. Beyond acting as money, many cryptocurrencies power entire ecosystems — enabling smart contracts, decentralised applications, and tokenised assets. Bitcoin pioneered the category as sound, censorship-resistant money, while thousands of others have since explored different technical and economic designs.
