Altcoin
Any cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin. The term combines "alternative" and "coin". Examples include Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), and Litecoin (LTC).
Altcoins emerged as developers sought to improve on or diverge from Bitcoin's design. Some, like Ethereum, introduced programmable smart contracts; others focus on speed, privacy, or specific use cases. While Bitcoin remains the largest and most established cryptocurrency by market capitalisation, thousands of altcoins now exist, ranging from major projects with real utility to speculative tokens with little underlying value. Investors should research each altcoin carefully, as risk profiles vary enormously.
