How secure is the Bitcoin network?
The Bitcoin blockchain is one of the most secure computing networks ever created. It is protected by an enormous amount of computational work — the combined hash rate of thousands of mining operations worldwide. To alter a confirmed Bitcoin transaction, an attacker would need to control more than 50% of this total computing power, which would cost billions of dollars and would likely be detected and countered before it could succeed.
Bitcoin has operated continuously since January 2009 without a single successful attack on the core protocol. The network has never been hacked. Incidents that are described as 'Bitcoin hacks' in the media are almost always attacks on exchanges, wallets or individual users — not on the Bitcoin network itself.
The real threats to your Bitcoin
Losing your private keys
If you lose your private keys and have no backup (seed phrase), your Bitcoin is permanently inaccessible. An estimated 3–4 million Bitcoin may be permanently lost this way. Always back up your seed phrase securely.
Phishing attacks
Attackers create fake websites, emails and messages that impersonate legitimate Bitcoin services. They trick users into entering their private keys or seed phrases. Always verify URLs carefully and never enter your seed phrase online.
Exchange hacks
Centralised cryptocurrency exchanges hold large amounts of Bitcoin on behalf of users. When exchanges are hacked, users can lose their funds. Only keep on exchanges what you need for active trading.
Malware and keyloggers
Malicious software can capture your private keys, seed phrases or passwords. Use reputable security software, keep your devices updated, and consider a dedicated device for significant Bitcoin holdings.
Social engineering scams
Scammers impersonate support staff, celebrities or government officials to convince victims to send Bitcoin. Bitcoin transactions are irreversible — once sent, funds cannot be recovered.
SIM swapping
Attackers convince mobile carriers to transfer your phone number to their SIM, then use it to bypass SMS-based two-factor authentication. Use authenticator apps rather than SMS for 2FA wherever possible.

Use a hardware wallet for significant holdings
A hardware wallet (cold wallet) stores your private keys offline, making them inaccessible to online attackers. For any significant Bitcoin holding, a hardware wallet from a reputable manufacturer is strongly recommended.
Back up your seed phrase — offline, physically
Write your seed phrase on paper or metal. Store it in a secure physical location — ideally multiple locations. Never photograph it, type it into any device, or store it in cloud services.
Use strong, unique passwords
Use a password manager to generate and store strong, unique passwords for every Bitcoin-related account. Never reuse passwords.
Enable two-factor authentication
Use an authenticator app (not SMS) for two-factor authentication on all exchange and wallet accounts. SMS-based 2FA is vulnerable to SIM swapping.
Verify everything before sending
Bitcoin transactions are irreversible. Always double-check the recipient address before confirming a transaction. Malware can silently replace clipboard addresses.
Be sceptical of unsolicited contact
No legitimate Bitcoin service will contact you unsolicited asking for your private keys, seed phrase or password. If someone does, it is a scam.

Has Bitcoin ever been hacked?
The Bitcoin network itself has never been successfully hacked. The protocol has operated securely since 2009. However, numerous cryptocurrency exchanges, wallets and individual users have been hacked, resulting in significant losses. The distinction is important: the Bitcoin blockchain is secure; the services built on top of it vary in their security.
What happens if I lose my seed phrase?
If you lose your seed phrase and your wallet device fails or is lost, your Bitcoin is permanently inaccessible. There is no customer support, no password reset, and no way to recover access without the seed phrase. This is why secure backup is critical.
Is it safe to keep Bitcoin on an exchange?
Keeping Bitcoin on an exchange is convenient but carries risks. Exchanges can be hacked, go bankrupt, or freeze withdrawals. The general principle is: only keep on exchanges what you need for active trading. For long-term storage, use a self-custody wallet where you control the private keys.
What is a 51% attack?
A 51% attack is a theoretical attack where a single entity gains control of more than 50% of Bitcoin's total mining hash rate, potentially allowing them to double-spend transactions. Given Bitcoin's enormous hash rate, executing a 51% attack would require billions of dollars of hardware and energy, making it economically irrational.
