Halving
An event that occurs approximately every four years (every 210,000 blocks) where the Bitcoin block reward is cut in half. Halvings reduce the rate of new Bitcoin supply, historically preceding significant price increases.
The halving is Bitcoin's built-in monetary policy in action. By cutting the block subsidy in half roughly every four years, it steadily slows the creation of new coins until the 21 million cap is reached. Past halvings — in 2012, 2016, 2020, and 2024 — have each preceded major bull markets, as reduced new supply meets steady or rising demand. While history does not guarantee future results, the halving remains one of the most closely watched events in the crypto calendar.
