Fiat Currency
Government-issued currency not backed by a physical commodity such as gold. Examples include GBP (British Pound), USD (US Dollar), and EUR (Euro). Bitcoin is often described as an alternative to fiat currency.
Fiat currencies derive their value from government decree and public trust rather than intrinsic backing. Central banks can expand the supply of fiat money, which supports flexible monetary policy but can also lead to inflation over time. Bitcoin was designed as a contrast: a currency with a fixed, transparent supply that no single authority can inflate. Comparisons between Bitcoin and fiat often centre on scarcity, control, and long-term purchasing power.
