Satoshi (sat)

The smallest unit of Bitcoin, equal to 0.00000001 BTC (one hundred millionth of a Bitcoin). Named after Bitcoin's creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. As Bitcoin's price rises, transactions are increasingly denominated in satoshis.

A satoshi, or "sat", is the atomic unit of Bitcoin — there are 100 million sats in one BTC. This fine divisibility means Bitcoin remains usable for small payments even as the price of a whole coin climbs. Enthusiasts increasingly price everyday items in sats, and the Lightning Network makes sat-level micropayments practical. The unit honours the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin, whose true identity remains unknown.
