Public Key

A cryptographic key derived from a private key that can be shared publicly. Bitcoin addresses are derived from public keys. Sharing your public key or address does not compromise your funds.

The public key is mathematically derived from the private key using one-way cryptography, meaning the public key can be shared freely without any risk of revealing the private key. Bitcoin addresses, which you share to receive payments, are themselves derived from public keys. This asymmetric relationship — easy to go from private to public, effectively impossible to reverse — is what makes secure, permissionless transactions possible.
